Brigadeiro/Beijinho Recipe

Brigadeiros are a common Brazilian treat, and very simple to make. I have been fine-tuning the recipe for a while, adding a little heavy cream for a creamier chocolate. Beijinhos are similar, using grated coconut in place of chocolate, and topped with coconut, as well. Brigadeiros are named after a brigadier, whose wife invented the recipe. Beijinho means “little kiss”, similar Hershey’s kisses.

Ingredients (makes ~13 brigadeiros):

  • 1 can (14 oz) condensed milkĀ 
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened powdered chocolateĀ  (I use Ghirardelli)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • (optional) 3 tablespoons heavy cream
  • Toppings of choice (sprinkles, nuts, grated coconut, etc.)
  • 1/4 cup grated coconut (beijinho only)
  • ~13 Cloves (beijinho only)

Over medium heat, pour in your condensed milk, then add in butter and, if making Brigadeiros, chocolate. Continually stir with a wooden spoon, and add in heavy cream if you choose to use it. When you can take a spoonful and flip it upside down without it immediately falling, remove from heat. If making Beijinhos, stir in grated coconut. Pour mixture into a bowl and let cool.

After it has cooled, place your desired toppings in bowls and set out ~15 mini-cupcake cups. Butter up your hands (to avoid sticky fingers) and roll the mixture into a sphere with your hands. Then, roll into your topping and place in a cup. For Beijinhos, insert a single clove on top.
